CleanCity Project in National City, California

Location: National City, California

National City is home to Mile of Cars, one of the first auto malls in the world, and US Naval Base San Diego. Due to the dense concentration of industries in the area, large amounts of pollutants are released into the air, water, and soil. Most residents are unaware of the human health effects and dangers of pollution exposure.

The National City CleanCity interactive dashboard was developed using ArcGIS Pro to provide educational awareness on the dangers of industrial chemicals found in the air that can lead to cancer, asthma, pulmonary disease, and cardiovascular disease. The dashboard focused on communities where toxic releases are rampant and less green space is found. The interactive dashboard includes K-12 schools and residential hot spot zones that are most affected by high concentrations of pollution and rising health issues. Data was taken from the Office of Environmental Health Hazard and US Census. Accessible and easy to navigate, the interactive dashboard provides data in multiple languages to accommodate different groups of people using infographics, index data, and animations to educate people on the dangers of diesel, lead, toxic release pollutant levels, and health information.
