Imperial Beach is a city in the southwestern area of San Diego County just 5 miles north of the Mexico border. Community members have protested sewage and trash runoff, odors, ear infections, bacteria levels, skin rashes, and unusual taste in the water, despite governmental water quality testing policies.
The Metabolism of Cities Living Lab and the United Nations Environmental Program – Major Group for Children and Youth – Microplastics and Marine Litter Working Group organized ahead of COP26 a youth summit event of interactive meetings addressed to young people around the world. Through a partnership with Hubzine Italia, Citta Studi Campus Sostenibile, Politecnico di Milano, and #All 4 Climate Italy.
This project defines a replicable and flexible methodological framework for assessing the magnitude and distribution of marine pollution and impacts of beach activities. This analysis aims to provide comprehensive and harmonized information on plastics to deepen understanding on the management of marine resources using citizen science.
The exhibit consists of two parts: Metabolism of Cities Living Lab SDSU 4 SDGs “Leave No One Behind ” Exhibition & Libraries and Sustainability: Working Toward the UN Sustainable Development Goals in the SDSU Library.
The Metabolism of Cities Living Lab researchers presented “Monitoring marine litter through participatory GIS: case studies and lessons learned” at the FOSS4G Conference in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The Metabolism of Cities Living Lab researchers presented “Localizing the SDGs by strengthening diversity and deliberation in climate adaptation planning in southern California and the Baja California Mexico region” at the Hispanic Heritage Month, SDSN-USA event.
